GRADE 6
HABIT #1: BE PROACTIVE
LESSON 4: FREEDOM TO CHOOSE
You are in control of your life! While you may not be able to control what happens to you, you have the ability and freedom to choose your reaction. Watch the video and discuss how Deven Jackson chose to be proactive.
PROACTIVE AND REACTIVE LANGUAGE The way you talk will show if you are proactive or reactive. Reactive language takes power away from you and gives it to someone or something else. Proactive language, on the other hand, puts the control back in your hands and shows that you are choosing your response.
LESSON 5: INITIATIVE
If you don't like the something about yourself, you have the power to change it. It just takes a little initiative. You may be focusing on what is wrong instead of what is right. What do you need to focus on, and how will you do it?
LESSON 6: CIRCLE OF CONTROL Sometimes, our circles of control are bigger than we think. Take a look at this article about Paying it Forward and affecting other people in a positive way. Anything is Possible.
Circle of Control
(talk to class about where to place the following and why)
1. The bus ride to school
2. Cafeteria Food
3. homework
4. Getting to school on time
5. Elective Choices
6. Trying out for team/play
7. Final Exams

LESSON 7: CHOOSE YOUR WEATHER
Only you can control how you fee and what you do. . By choosing your own weather, you make the decision on how you react and respond in both good and bad situations.

When Riley moves to a new town and all seems hopeless, how does she choose her own weather in this scene? Do all of the characters choose their own weather?
|
Most of the times, when we are reactive, we are acting with our "lizard brain." Find out more on how to get out of lizard brain thinking with the video below and this article. |
LESSON 8: STOP AND THINK
Are you a reactive person? Reactive people tend to act without pausing to think. Habit 1: Be Proactive reminds us that between every stimulus and response is a space. Proactive people use this space to stop, think, and weigh the options before they respond. You have a choice in everything you do and say! |

HOLLYWOOD HABITS: AKEELAH AND THE BEE
6th graders will watch Akeelah and the Bee (PG) and evaluate the importance of Private Victory before Public Victory.

Habit 2 - Begin with the end in mind
Habit 2, Begin With The End In Mind, focuses on the importance of visualizing your goals and figuring out a plan to achieve them. You would never build a house without a blueprint, so why would you try to live your life without a plan in place? If you know where you are going, then you will better understand where you are now and which direction you need to take with your next steps. An important component of this habit is the development of a personal mission statement. This mission statement focuses on what you want to be and what you want to do and reminds you of the principles most important to you.
LESSON 9: MENTAL CREATION PRECEDES PHYSICAL CREATION
If you think about the future, you maybe find yourself visualizing what it will look like and who you will be. You may imagine yourself doing a job you love or raising a family. It is important to have these visualizations about where you want to go in life because they help you to make the sometimes tough choices that will make that picture a reality.
Watch Simba sing about his future. What did he visualize? Did he achieve those goals? |
|
LESSON 10: CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES
Every choice you make has a consequence. Have you ever made a choice you regretted? It is probably because you were unhappy with the consequence!! One naturally leads to the other. Make sure to remember that when you are struggling to make the right choice.

LESSON 11: PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
Do you know what a motto is? It is a sentence or phrase that captures the beliefs or ideas of a person or a group. A mission statement is much like a motto. It reminds you of what is important to you and what you stand for. When life throws you a curve-ball and things aren't going the way you want, your mission statement will remind you of what is really important and what you need to focus on.

LESSON 12: GOAL SETTING
Setting a goal is as simple as figuring out something you would like to accomplish and setting yourself a deadline to make it happen. Some goals will be easy. Some will be tough. Some will be impossible to reach, but you will become better in the process. Watch the video with Ormie The Pig. His goal is lofty, but he perseveres as he encounters many obstacles! |
|
LESSON 13: GOAL TRACKING
You are much more likely to achieve you goal if you write it down. You also increase the odds of meeting your goal if you track your progress and even more so if you tell someone about your goal and your progress. It would be hard to watch a sport without a scoreboard...goals are no different. Make sure you keep score!

HOLLYWOOD HABITS: THE LORAX
It seems as though people do not think with the End in Mind when it comes to the environment. For generations, humans have used natural resources from our planet with little regard for the future. How could being proactive and beginning with the end in mind change our future when it comes to the Earth?

GRADE 6 - HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
How many times have you found yourself with a list of important things to do and no time to do them? Habit 3, Put First Things First, will help you to manage your time and prioritize your to-do list. Since Habit 1 has put you in the driver's seat and Habit 2 has given you a map of where to go, you need Habit 3 to help you navigate and eliminate any roadblocks on your journey.

LESSON 15: URGENT VS. IMPORTANT
Many times we find ourselves doing tasks that aren't supporting the goals we want to achieve. The time matrix helps you to identify where you are spending your time and where you need to be to be the most effective.

LESSON 24: GENUINE LISTENING
Genuine Listening involves not only listening with your ears, but with your eyes and heart. When someone is talking, your intent should only be to understand what they are saying, NOT reply to what they are saying?
Do the following lesson with your 6th graders to help introduce this Habit
LESSON 25: LISTENING SKILLS
|
Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. Print out the worksheets below and use with your 6th graders to help them improve upon their listening skills. |
LESSON 26: LISTENING WITH EARS, EYES, AND HEART
Try this lesson with your 6th graders..................
Secret MessageMake two teams and have each stand in a line (parallel with each other). Take two students from the front of each line outside the classroom and whisper a sentence to them (e.g. “Tonight it is going to rain and tomorrow it is going to be sunny”). Then the students come back and whisper the sentence to the next S, who in turn whispers it to the next, and so on down the line. The student at the end either writes the correct sentence on the board or says the sentence to the teacher (depending on the level of the class). Points are awarded: 2 points for a perfect sentence, 1 point for nearly perfect and a bonus point if the team finished first and got the sentence right. Then do it again with two new students.
LESSON 27: LISTENING ATTENTIVELY
You might not be "interested" in everything someone is talking about, but you still have something to gain from listening to what they are saying. Watch the video and discuss the listening skills of the Toy Story characters. How can they improve?

HABIT #6: SYNERGIZE
HABIT #6: SYNERGIZE
|
This is a clever video I came across several months ago that emphasizes the importance of teamwork (demonstrated by crabs, ants and penguins, no less!).The underlying message is “Union is strength; it’s smarter to travel in groups”. Take a quick look, and as you’re watching, think about what lessons in teamwork leaders could learn from these.
So what are the lessons here for leaders? Here are the ones I came up with:
